- Description
- This chapter calls for moral theology and the ecclesial magisterium to be attentive to new insights concerning conscience formation. Beginning with a consideration of the understanding of conscience promulgated in the Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes, it notes a lack of due attention to the issue of conscience formation in this document, especially when it is compared to other Vatican II documents. Noting that this was likely an oversight which can be put down to the time in which Gaudium et Spes was promulgated, the chapter traces a lack of attention to conscience formation in moral theology generally over the past fifty years. The chapter then develops an argument for the importance of seeking out new insights concerning conscience formation, and sketches the outline for such a search which integrates insights from Scripture and the sciences, and has implications for the discipline of moral theology as a whole.
